Your Move MKE Inc. is a non-profit organization that envisions bringing families on the south side of Milwaukee closer together, using programs that focus on higher-level thinking and self-expression through the elements of hip hop.
MATC Alum, Raquel (Rockz) Aleman, is the co-founder and executive director of Your Move MKE. One of Aleman’s programs within the organization is the Restorative Justice Ciphers program, which is currently granted by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Aleman says they start their meetings off by “gathering in a circle and talking about issues in our community.” They have covered topics like domestic violence, imprisonment, children being abducted, injustice and even wars.
Aleman wants youth to look at situations from a different perspective. “We encourage youth to not only talk about their perspective but to look at things from the perspective of a victim and also an aggressor, so they are able to look at a situation in full circle and then they take these topics that we speak about or have experienced and express themselves through music.” Parents are involved in the process too. “ We also incorporate adults and parents; we encourage intergenerational bonding for the family and to have a safe space where they can interact together,” Aleman said.
Recently, the organization has launched its Urban Trade Skills program as well. Your Move MKE hopes to continue their growth and success through their programs and activities.
