A drop to new life

by Calvin Hylton
Times Staff Reporter

The Occupational Therapy Association students worked  with the American Red Cross at the Downtown Milwaukee Campus on September 27 for a blood drive.

“Every donation saves at least three lives,” said Susan Heitman, Coordinator of the Occupational Therapy Assistant program and co-advisor for Occupational Therapy Association.

The need for a stable and steady blood supply is crucial to save the lives of those in need. Blood is a constantly circulating fluid, providing the body with nutrition, oxygen, and waste removal-making it a vital life source for those who are in need, who go through medical procedures that require a loss of blood. “I have a universal blood type, and I want to help people,” said Mark Rose, a Liberal Arts major.

“I volunteer because I want to gain the experience for my career in the medical field,” said Joe Fortune, Occupational Therapy major.

Charge Nurse Sylvia Kacheris said, “bringing the bloodmobile on campus makes it more convenient for students to donate, and it also helps create a health and crucial habit for students to donate.”

If you’re thinking about a better way to help people in need, donating blood lets you give as much as you can. Donating once can never be enough.

Mequon cookout quite tasty

by Kathleen Becker
Times Contributor

The Welcome Back Cookout was a great success!  The parking lot was overflowing with students.  Rita Wood and the Mequon Student Government representatives set up tables, raffles and music to make the event more enjoyable.  The food was perfect for the event.  The roasted corn on the cob was one of the favorites.

The event also brought in a great crowd for the club recruitment tables as it was also Club Recruitment Week.  The Information Security Club had a grab bag game to raise money for upcoming events.  The game was a lot of fun and some lucky winners received MATC duffle bags, 8GB USBs, gift baskets, digital photo frames, a wireless mouse and gift certificates to local restaurants.

Thanks to all of the students and faculty for such a great turnout!
