Fairs promote student success

Acquiring new skills and knowledge is hard. As a student, you have to keep up with reading and assignments. Your grades have to be good enough to keep you moving forward in your program, and many students are doing all this while balancing work and family responsibilities outside the classroom.
That’s one reason MATC provides multiple resources to help students with academic and non-academic issues that might get in the way of their success.
Representatives from Tutoring, Academic Support, Student Accommodation Services, the library and, at the Downtown Milwaukee campus, Multicultural Student Services and Bilingual Education areas, will be staffing upcoming Student Success Fairs. The fairs will be held at all campuses from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and 4 – 7 p.m. March 16-19. Downtown, the fair will be in the Second Floor Atrium in the S Building, at West Allis and Oak Creek by the cafeteria area, and at Mequon in front of the Learning Commons.
“We wanted to make sure that day and evening students at all campuses have a chance to meet and talk with representatives from the different support areas,” said Amy Waldman, Retention Alert coordinator. Waldman said that anyone identifying themselves as a first-semester student will receive a welcome gift, and all students will be entered in a drawing for a gift card from the MATC Bookstore.
The fairs are timed to coincide with six-week progress grades. Waldman said that’s a time when some students, especially those new to college, may first realize they need help.
“Students who may not be doing as well as they’d like have time to raise their grades and finish the semester strong,” she said. “It’s important that we make it as easy as possible for our students to connect with the help they need.”
Regardless of where they attend classes, students can use the resources at any of MATC’s four campuses.
Retention Alert is another way to reach out for help with school and other issues, Waldman said. Students can fill out a referral form by going to www.matc.edu/student/resources/retention_alert.cfm and following the instructions. Instructors can also refer students for Retention Alert services.
