A friendly get together welcomes new members

West Allis Student Government held a get together on February 11 in order to become familiar with the new members of its organization. It was hosted in room 117, began at noon and ended around 3 pm. “It’s [The Friendly Get Together] a way for us [Student Government] to introduce ourselves to the new members of Student Government,” said Travis Lilach, President of West Campus Student Government.
The meeting talked about projects, coming upcoming events and getting to know why the new members joined the organization.
Many joined so that they could combine their talents with the focus of hopefully helping the school and students within it. “We are here for the students,” Lilach said. “We want to know what their thinking; we want to hear their complaints, otherwise we can’t represent them.”
Wesf Campus Student government also needed to pick people to run certain areas of the organization. They have a head for all 4 committees to keep thins up-to-date and organized.
The committees include Community Affairs, “who establish a positive relationship with the community outside of the school,” said Scott Dennis, Vice President of Student Government. “They set up blood drives, service learning projects and neighborhood cleanups.”
The Civics Committee, “does legislation, writes resolutions and generally deals with the political side of the organization” said Lilach. Research and Development goes out and looks for programs and projects to do.
They find out how to do it, who to contact and the locale. The last is Campus Events which is where all the events that happen on campus are organized.
Though each committee has their own job, they all work as a team. If one member has an idea for another committee, they are free to help. They work as a team to help MATC become a better and more colorful school.
Some of the requirements of a Student Government member are having an open mind, being able to work as a team, coming up with alternatives, being open to suggestions and working for the greater good. To be an organization, they must have at least 7 members.
