“Old Embracing the New” 40th Anniversary Celebration of MATC’s Black Student Union

The 40th Anniversary of the Black Student Union took place at the MATC downtown campus on Friday, April, 27, 2012.
The theme of the gathering was “The Old Embracing the New.” Some of the speakers were Dray Love, a school teacher, Minister Rozalyn Allen, Tony Kearney, a contractor, Ronald Fancher of MATC Student Services, and Sammuel Alford, Pro tiem President for the BSU, who closed the ceremony for the evening.

Rose Massey, coordinator of the Just One program, orchestrated a surprise introduction of the keynote speaker. Dr. Howard Fuller, dressed in a jogging suit, had no idea that Jayme Montgomery, former BSU President, now a part of The Young Voters of America Org, would introduce him to the podium. However, he delivered a speech that was not only more powerful than any suited delivery, but ended with selected words from Black history’s Frederick Douglass.

Archie Graham, Director of MATC Student Life, help served the banquet of chicken, beef and veggie shish kebabs, broasted wings, fruit and cheese plates, punch and cake.

Gerald Trotter, Manager of Printing Services, Downtown campus, also a BSU advisor, took photographs for the engagement and there is an anniversary book, “On Their Shoulders,” set to be released at the end of this semester.
