Do you love Super Smash Bros, Rocket League, or Overwatch? Ever dreamed of playing these games as part of a competitive team? MATC is launching its own Esports Program! This spring, MATC will compete in the Wisconsin Esports Conference (WEC) against other state schools, bringing gaming to a whole new level.
What is Esports?
Esports is short for electronic sports. It’s a form of competitive video gaming where players and teams face off in leagues across a variety of game titles and genres. It combines strategy, skill and teamwork to create an electrifying experience for both participants and spectators.
When are tryouts?
MATC’s esports program will kick off with tryouts this spring, giving students the chance to form teams and participate in a shortened competitive season. According to Assistant Athletic Director Travis Mrozek, the program may expand to compete under the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) in the fall. NJCAA oversees all Stormers sports, in addition to the WEC.
Opportunities for Students
Head Athletic Director Randy Casey highlights the wide-reaching appeal of esports, saying “Gaming crosses all demographics and allows students to participate as a team while they pursue their future careers.” This provides a great opportunity for students who might not have previously considered athletics. While MATC is a two-year college offering an associate degree in computer simulation and gaming, many colleges and universities now offer scholarships to skilled esports players as part of programs designed to develop gaming expertise. MATC’s Director of Student Life, Erich Zeimantz, mentions that gaming has broad appeal to students and the community.“Offering a two-year college option to compete at the college level opens new pathways for students.” he says.
MATC is currently recruiting esports players for its newly established varsity program. If you’ve ever dreamed of being part of a competitive esports team or are skilled at video games, this is your chance!Interested students should email [email protected] for more information.
