Inspiration and education from legal alum

“ReMember” is a slogan that has led many members of  MATC back through the corridors of  education to platforms and panels of students who are more than just interested in hearing real-life business experiences practiced,  but who also have experienced business and can share the pros and cons of lessons learned. Jean Fredricks, an alumni of MATC, is no different. After earning a degree in fine arts (which required the sacrifice of taking night classes while raising two children), Fredericks didn’t stop there. She took a job as an office assistant and learned from the ground up.
During a speaking engagement at the downtown campus on Monday, Nov. 17, Fredricks shared some her most important discoveries in the professional world. “I like learning in small office settings,” she said.  “Much easier to learn file organization and locations.”
Working for the U.S. Attorney office, Fredricks has focused on detail and identifying typos. “Being meticulous and concise  goes a long way in this business,” she said. Her advice to all students is that they learn how marketable they can be in the work force through the representation of a résumé. Her long-term goal is to become a permanent paralegal and not encounter a hiring freeze. “As long as I futher my education with CLE’s (Continued Legal Education) credits,” Fredricks shared, “I will always have a career to look forward to.”

Ms. Jean Fredricks from the U.S. Attorney’s office spoke about her experiences in the paralegal field, as well as about her time at MATC, to the MATC Paralegal Association.
