Language lost and found

Panelists discussed the revival of a lost Native American language after viewing a film by Anne Makepeace titled “As Nutayunean: We Still Live Here” at Discovery World on November 3.

The discussion group included (L-R); Roger Thomas, Ojibwe teacher and member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, Andrew Wiberg, former Ojibwe student and graduate student in Library & Information Science at UWM, Bernard Perley, a member of the Anthropology Department at UWM and Diane Amour, coordinator/senior advisor for American Indian Student Services at UWM and board member of the Indian Community School.

According to MPTV Community Cinema, the Wampanoag saved the Pilgrims, but lost their land and language.

Once heard throughout eastern Massachusetts, Wampanoag had no remaining speakers for more than a century. Jessie Little Doe Baird, led an effort to bring the language back to life with amazing results.
