The month of June has been a busy one for MATC’s women’s basketball program. On June 17, Kalamazoo Valley Community College announced the hiring of former MATC basketball coach, Arom Murrell, as the new head coach of their women’s basketball team.
Murrell was the Stormers’ head coach from 2022 to 2026. Before that, he served as the assistant coach for the women’s team in the 2021-2022 season. He was also an assistant on the men’s basketball team from 2009 to 2011.
The search has been underway to replace Murrell. “For our next coach we will be looking for someone who can continue the growth of the women’s basketball program and foster a successful positive culture,” said Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Administration Travis Mrozek.
When asked about the search in mid-June, Mrozek said the Stormers “hope to announce a new head coach this week.” When contacted today, Mrozek said “we are still working out some details. Once everything is set we will make an announcement.”
Mrozek said there is another change for the women’s head coaching position. It is going from a part-time (stipend) role to full-time. The duties will be split between being the head coach for the women’s basketball program and working with MATC’s Recruiting Department, which is led by Marwill Santiago, the director of recruiting.
Under Murrell’s leadership in 2025-2026, the women’s basketball team’s record was 16-15. While Murrell is looking forward to his new position, he said, “I wish the MATC women’s basketball program the best of luck and hope that whatever they were looking for that they find in their new head coach.”
