Karl Marx returns from the dead

On April 15 Jerry Levy came to perform, One-Man Play “Marx in Soho,” a play written by the late Howard Zinn.Through his insightful performance he broke down the true meanings of Karl Marx’s ideas.

The play begins with the authorities of the afterlife giving Marx permission to come back and have a chance to clear his name.

There was a little mix up, and instead of returning to his old stomping ground of Soho London, he landed in Soho in New York.

It is this type of wit that is carried on throughout the play. Marx comes back to defend himself stating, “I am not a Marxist.” He takes time to tell us (society) that we have interpreted his ideas wrong.

The true meaning Marx was trying to get across was that he wanted working people to control government decisions so that a government would no longer be needed.

He used the Commune of Paris, an 1871 revolution by the people themselves to obtain true freedom for all men, as an example.

The play also adds the human side of Marx, telling about his life, wife, children, friends, enemies and how he struggled to survive as an impoverished immigrant.
