New inductees into the PTK and NTHS

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) are two of MATC’s prestigious honor societies. On November 21, 2008, both of these societies held a reception, inducting new members. All of these students will be nationally recognized and will graduate with honors.

Phi Theta Kappa, one of the organizations present that night, has recognized excellence in two-year colleges since 1918 and has become the largest and one of the most prestigious honor societies in higher education. To get a good idea, more than 1.2 million members have been inducted at 1,200 colleges in the United States, Canada and other countries. Membership is based primarily on academic achievement. To be eligible, a student must have completed at least 12 hours of coursework leading to an associate degree program and must have a grade-point average of 3.5 and have full citizenship in the United States.

Compared to Phi Theta Kappa, NTHS is a nonprofit honor organization for outstanding students enrolled in occupational, vocational or technical programs. The organization was founded in 1984 in Grambling, South Carolina, by a diverse group of business, community and education leaders. The organization has chapters throughout the United States, including MATC as one of their colleges.

Candidates for NTHS should be students who have demonstrated scholastic achievement, skill development, good character, leadership, honesty and responsibility. All candidates for membership in the society must be approved by the local school administration and must meet local and national membership standards.

Students must have been enrolled in a diploma or associate degree, have completed at least 12 credits of a diploma program or 24 credits of an associate degree program and must have completed the required credits with at least a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average.

The Times would like to recognize the following NTHS initiates: Constantine George Belissary, Thaimarie Butler, Cayla Clements, Kate Ehlke, Brittany Erdmann, Megan Leigh Hamilton, Jed T.
