What’s Education without the Experience?

I was predominantly raised in a one-parent home, a single mother of four, with the determination and drive to provide the best for her children. Against all odds she maintained her resilience and ambition to drive for results that would ultimately make a difference for her family. Although she raised us well, I wasn’t oblivious to the fact that she struggled many days. She maintained in survival mode and nine times out of 10 put herself last. To my recollection, education was never a topic of discussion and therefore was not a goal to strive towards. My mother did eventually go to college in her early 30s. She exemplified excellence in her pursuit of education; she was and still is a true role model for her children. I shared my mother’s story because mine is very similar. I have struggled, and overcome so many obstacles with a steadfast hunger for more. I enrolled in college after becoming an entrepreneur, and single mother. I knew that taking care of my family was my main objective. To enroll in college with a long-term commitment, and no guarantee to a promised future was not an option. I decided to work instead of becoming a student. After some life- changing experiences that opened my eyes to a whole new world of opportunity, I embraced the thought of college. I was so excited, eager and ready for all that this opportunity had to offer. I knew that I didn’t want to just be a student; I was in a growing phase in my life where my selfless outlook initiated acts of giving and philanthropy. I knew that education was a wonderful thing, but for me it was also important to have an experience. In my opinion college can be so much more than lectures and expensive books. I longed for the opportunity to be associated with something outside of myself and ultimately was anxious for an experience. So I enrolled in the Interior Design program and was intrigued at the orientation. There were so many opportunities for involvement and I knew in my heart exactly which opportunity was best for me.

I joined the MATC Times  as a journalist in 2014, and I am now the opinions editor, after one year of service. I cannot express how wonderful it feels to be associated with such greatness. Our award-winning paper, team of students and advisors are amazing. Joining the Times has afforded me the opportunity to travel abroad and network with other like-minded, goal and career driven individuals. I am so pleased with my decision to become involved.  I continue to look for opportunities that will enhance my interpersonal skills and knowledge.

I cannot thank MATC enough for providing this opportunity to myself, and the entire student body alike. Maybe you could be the next journalist with the Times. We’d love to hear your story!
