Roxanne Dunkelberger-Sanchez gives students helpful tips for studying and managing their time during the forum held on the Downtown Milwaukee campus Sept. 22.

On Sept. 22 Roxanne Dunkelberger-Sanchez, a tutoring specialist for Student Services at MATC, held an hour-long forum on the Downtown Milwaukee campus to discuss ways students can improve their time management and study skills.

Dunkelberger-Sanchez covered everything from active note-taking to managing your personal relationships that can get in the way with your academic success. The event was sponsored by the Men of Color initiative.

While open to the public, the presentation catered to the students participating in the Promise program at MATC.  The Promise program is for students recently graduated from high school; one of the requirements to be in the Promise program is to attend three of the workshops provided by Student Services. Dunkelberger-Sanchez stated, “The number one challenge first semester students face at MATC is recognizing how much time and discipline it takes to be  successful. Students think the transition from high school won’t be that hard because in high school you were at school all day, and in college you’re only in class for a couple hours a day, but they don’t realize the out of class workload is much larger.”

Pretty much the most crippling challenge we all face is procrastination. To combat procrastination and help students excel in school, she said the most useful tools students have are academic support services.  Dunkelberger-Sanchez pointed out that a lot of students are scared to ask for help, but if they reach out and use academic support and tutoring services it would make the workload a lot more manageable and reduce stress levels.

Overall the workshop was a success. Ayanna Hill,  a student in attendance, stated, “I’m going to use my time better and prioritize my personal life with school.”  Students interested in using academic support services. Can contact Dunkelberger-Sanchez  at [email protected], or go to Room C201 for tutoring.

Academic support services are offered on each campus.
