MATC students brought their energy ,and wore Black History Month t-shirts, as they rallied behind the men’s and women’s basketball teams at Alverno College. Both teams faced Joliet Junior College on Thursday, February 5.
Black History Month Recognition
During the games, MATC highlighted BHM by sharing facts about African American sports achievements during timeouts and a performance of the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” between games. The month highlights the achievements, contributions, and resilience of Black Americans throughout history. It was first established in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson.
Game Highlights
The women’s basketball team tipped off at 6 p.m. and set the tone, defeating Joliet 76-72. The team had a one-point lead in the first half, 18-17. Sophomore guard/forward Emani Summers led the team with 16 points, 13 rebounds, and 2 assists. Freshman guard Sa’Nyai Mitchell added 8 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. Freshman forward Lalia Hamiel delivered 14 points, 3 steals, 2 assists, and 3 blocks. Sophomore forward Moriah Landry had 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists; As a team, the Stormers collected a total of 31 rebounds, 12 assists, and 31 turnovers. They now sit at 13-11 overall.
After the women’s team secured their win, the men’s basketball team kept the momentum rolling as they beat Joliet 113-93. The team took control of the entire game with a 28-13 lead early on in the first half. Sophomore point guard, Raydelh Boutin, with a MATC career high of 29 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. Freshman guard/ forward Turon Rivers delivered 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 assist. Sophomore guard/forward Jordan Jones with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal. Guard Jayden Hackett with 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Point guard Qi’Andre Washington had 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. The team tallied up 46 rebounds, 16 assists, and 12 turnovers. This marks the team’s 15th straight win bringing them to 22-3 overall this season.
Two dominant performances gave fans plenty to cheer about.
