MATC Times takes home three state journalism awards

The MATC Times won three awards from the Milwaukee Press Club’s 2025 Excellence in Wisconsin Journalism Collegiate Contest.

The Milwaukee Press Club is the “oldest continuously operating press club in North America,” and its yearly contest recognizes both student and professional journalists across the state of Wisconsin. Its Gridiron and Awards Dinner was held on May 8, 2026, at the Pfister Hotel, where professional and collegiate participants received their awards.

MATC Times Sports Editor Crystal Williams won Gold in the Best Sports Story category for her story about Jayden Hackett, an MATC Stormers basketball player. Her story offers an intimate glimpse into Hackett’s personal life and goals.

Shari Wszalek, MATC alumna and Times Photographer, won Gold in the Best Still Photo category for her photo of former Milwaukee Brewers announcer Bob Uecker’s memorial at American Family Field. Her photo features the beer, baseball caps, flowers and other items that decorated the bronze statue of Uecker after his passing.

The MATC Times Staff won Silver in the Best Website Design category.

I am the Managing Editor of the MATC Times for the 2026–2027 school year. As a student journalist, I aim to provide accurate, relevant, and engaging stories for MATC students and staff. I see this as both a responsibility and a privilege.

I started as a writer for the Times in the fall of 2025, and assumed the News Editor position the following Spring of 2026. Beyond journalism, I enjoy writing poetry and essays. I also lead a monthly poetry open-mic night and plan to pursue English after earning my associate degree.
