The Lone Bellow energizes Turner Hall

The Lone Bellow musical group performed at Turner Hall on Oct. 19 and played a bluesy, folksy, country kind of music. The band had a great energy that the audience fed off of. The lead singer, Zach Williams, was very involved with the audience, even directing them like they were part of a symphony orchestra.

The band mixed up their set list with fast songs and slow. The slow songs often were only accompanied by one guitar. Many of their songs tell intense stories of deep sorrow and feeling.

The band consists of five musicians, four of which sing, although Williams, Brian Elmquist and Kanene Pipkin are the main performers. Williams and Elmquist play guitar, and Pipkin plays the mandolin, guitar and piano. Jason Pipkin plays the bass, guitar and piano. The fifth player is the drummer. Williams, Elmquist and Kanene Pipkin all sing.

The Lone Bellow began as a creative outlet for Williams, who learned to play the guitar and moved to New York City to pursue his music dreams. Elmquist, a long-time friend of Williams, met Williams one day at a diner in New York City. Elmquist brought along Kanene Pipkin, and the trio was created. The band began performing around New York City before creating their own album in 2013. The band released their second album on Jan. 27, 2015.

Williams said Turner Hall was “a bigger room than we deserve,” but the band filled the hall well with music and dancing. In the end, Williams said, “We must come back,” and the audience agreed.
