The women’s basketball team continued its tradition of volunteering at Hope House, an emergency shelter that provides housing for homeless men, women and children. The team and coaches participated in the Annual Hope House tree decorating event, something they’ve done for the past five years.
Head basketball coach Aaron Murrell emphasized the importance of contributing and connecting with the families in the shelter and letting them know how much the players care goes beyond basketball. “The tradition gives MATC players an opportunity to give back, learn from the experience, and put smiles on the faces of those who benefit from the shelter’s services.”
Murrell is proud of the team’s participation in this type of event. “It’s important that we send the right message to our athletes regarding their obligation as ambassadors of our institution,” he said.
The team and coaching staff set up the trees and hung decorations, and players had the opportunity to connect with the community and see the real-world impact of service. The Director of Hope House, Lorey Planas, welcomed the women’s basketball team and complimented their efforts.
Hope House started in 1987 when five local churches joined forces to address homelessness on Milwaukee’s south side. It started as a short-term shelter and has expanded to a long-term housing facility and community center. It offers many programs and activities, including a re-housing program with help finding temporary housing or an apartment. Hope House also provides up to two years of support, including assistance with rent and utilities, until they are financially independent.
