The game was well in hand. The Stormers were a minute away from certain victory. And then it happened. Melvin Brown, after receiving a pass at half court, made a decision.
“He was just standing there, and I was like. . . I’m dunking on him,” Brown later recalled in a postgame interview.
The him in that statement was College of Lake County’s 6’10” center, Eric Qualls, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time during MATC’s Tuesday, Nov. 11 win.
Qualls’ face, body and emotional well-being were all on the receiving end of a vicious tomahawk slam by Brown that sent the entire arena into a tizzy, leaving fans and players gape-jawed by Brown’s athleticism.
“It was a great individual play,” coach Casey stated. “With Melvin, that’s something we’re trying to get out of him.”
Brown claimed he’s had more impactful dunks in games but that this one was special due to the size of his opponent.
The play, including an agonizing slow-motion version that really drives home the suffering sustained by Qualls, can be seen at the Stormers website, matcstormers.com, and has been featured on midwestballers.com.
