With an impending blizzard threatening to blanket the metro Milwaukee area in inches of the dreadful white stuff, the women’s Stormers basketball team dumped its own version of a winter storm on the College of DuPage Chaparrals, winning their Jan. 31 game by a dominating score of 80 to 50.
Guard Shonnice Vaughn overcame a bit of a slow start to make her presence felt all over the court, accumulating 23 points, seven assists, seven steals and four blocks. Vaughn brought her usual intensity to the game, and it was anything but usual for the undermatched DuPage.
Guard Trisha Patton scored 20 points by combining smart midrange shooting with a Kevin McHale-like creativity close to the hoop. Patton also contributed 11 rebounds and two steals.
Guard Ciarra Heldt was molten lava from deep, hitting two late game 3-pointers to seal the deal. Heldt finished with nine points, all coming from behind the 3-point line. Heldt served to be a disturbance on the defensive end as well, poking two steals away from DuPage.
DeAndrea “DeDe” Jones, guard, was a wintry force to be reckoned with too, using a crushing brutality to keep the Stormers on top throughout the first half. Jones finished with eight points and three rebounds.
MATC forced 40 DuPage turnovers, a tally that was far too much to be overcome. The Stormers also controlled the boards, managing 24 second chance points.
The Chaparrals were led by forward Breanna Venson, who scored 17 points.
It was the sixth consecutive victory for MATC, which has improved to 17-6 for the year.
The Stormers will return to home action on Feb. 18 against  Harper College. All MATC home games are played at Alverno College. Attendance is free.
